The 3 Little Pigs – my “biased” review

My kids had waited patiently for a good part of this year for The 3 Little Pigs ever since I told them that they are back this year.  We started the year with the Mandarin version of the 3 Billy Goat Gruffs, followed by the revolutionary collaboration with Imitating the Dog (UK) for Hanuman  and finally after a looonnnnggg wait, my kids most loved production is their highlight for the month of August as they know the story inside out -The Three Little Pigs.

As for me, I am also very eager to see how the English version would match up against my most memorable TLC production which was the Mandarin version of the The Three Little Pigs  back in 2013 (sorry for being a broken record yet again for those who has been following my blog). I would say that I have a rather “biased” view given my high expectations for this production as compared to some one who is watching this for production for the very first time as there were big shoes to be filled.

With Danny Yeo helming the creative direction of this production (he was the director for the Mandarin version as well) , I am sure it will be in the same quality and entertainment value as before. I was hoping for a little twist or difference especially to those who has watched it before. So it is all up to the all new English production’s cast to match up against the previous cast of the Mandarin production.

Before that, let’s hear what Danny Yeo had to say about this year’s production which had set my expectations way up high even before catching the production.

With all TLC’s production, they opened the show with a very catchy song to set the story line and to introduce the 3 little pigs -Cha, Siu and Bao ( I loved how TLC has localised their production using local puns and terms, which adds the entertainment value to the adult audience).

13935131_1407996345882254_8034128919332669156_n (1)

“There are lots of pig tales big and small, but we think the greatest one of all is the one to do with one, two, three little pigs!”

And this was perhaps the only TLC production we have watched that we know the main songs in and out (all thanks to our TLC volume 2  CD in our car player).

tlc cd

My older kids and I were happily singing along the songs that we were familiar with throughout the show.

And my “biased” view on this much anticipating productions –

With a simple and well known story-line (with some strong family values thrown in it) it is already a sure-win formula. To add a strong cast and catchy songs/tunes, it is a home run!

There is really nothing much to critic – a well-rounded cast with acting and singing powess despite being a new cast to TLC.

13934879_1407995849215637_6191129296343868751_n

Here with their mama pig sending her 3 little pigs off to build their homes away from their crampy pigs’ sty. I am sure many mothers can relate to the same scenario many years down the road.

13932760_1407995779215644_3495778100438691272_n

This is one of the most heart warming scenes in my opinion – family sticks together! Get  it!

13880131_1407996059215616_6650846243843260103_n

And the one who stole the show! the big bad wolf! I supposed the level of entertainment went up many notches all thanks to the very “entertaining” wolf. I guess the big bad wolf is not that scary after all. I didn’t hear any young kids crying in the audience and neither did my younger ones cried or were scared of the big bad wolf. And all thanks to the big bad wolf, the adult audience were also very much entertained!

The actor who played the big bad wolf was exactly how I remembered the actor in the Mandarin productions – suave, charming and had a very good rapport with the audience. That said I still believe some dialogues and jokes are a tad better in the Mandarin productions , no fault to the cast or the script but it is the language! (if you know what I mean especially since the director was the same for both productions). So I gave George Chan (the one who played the wolf in the Mandarin production) a slightly better rating than Ian Chan (in the current production) but props to Ian , it was some pretty big shoes to fill too!

To me, there was no particular age range for this production, my 14 month old enjoyed it as much as my 7 year old ( I would say a lower primary kids would enjoy this production very much too even though its a very simple storyline) Given that it was baby C’s first live show, I must say the 3 little pigs and the big bad wolf did a good job in capturing his attention from the very start with the opening song. The baby literally stopped fidgetting and watched the stage intently at the opening song!

If there is one kids’ theatre production you want to catch this year, this has to be the ONE! And do support an entirely local/Asian cast and production! And for those who has not watched a TLC production before, please book your tickets NOW before the show ends on 17 September as this is one of their best ever productions.

And since it was the morning/afternoon after Joseph Schooling’s historic win, the cast also paid tribute to Joseph’s feat by cheering at the mere mention of Joseph Schooling! Support local all the way!

And if you think there is “biasness” in my review, check out what other parents had to say about the production!

Do remember to bring your little pigs to take photo at the standee for a chance to win tickets to the TLC’s last production of the year – Charlotte’s Web with the hashtag #TLC3Littlepigs

Spartan Junior Race 2016 (29 and 30 Oct) with giveaway – GET READY FOR THE MOST FUN KILOMETRE IN THE WORLD

Media invite

My family is big on outdoors but I am totally guilty of not exposing my 4 kids to the outdoors on a more regular basis. It often take an event like the Cold Storage Kids Run to “force” me to bring the kids outdoors. Of course with events, it is always more  fun to have other kids “race” together. When I first heard of the Spartan Junior Race last year, it was after the event where I saw some pictures of kids as young as 4 years old doing really adventurous stuff, like scale a wooden slanted wall, crawl under ropes, walk on narrow planks and I told myself, my older kids got to join this. I as an adult lack in fitness and confidence to join the adult version, but there is no stopping my kids from joining the Spartan Junior Race! Here are some pictures of last year’s Spartan Junior Race.

The Spartan Race was created by Joe De Sena,  a world-class adventure racer in the green mountains of Vermont. It is not just an obstacle-based race, but it has become a way of life to many who have joined the race. The founder has been advocating a lifestyle  – a healthy lifestyle by simple and achievable activities like waking up early, taking the stairs instead of the escalators, eating right by avoiding processed food and eat only when you are hungry etc. With 130 events in 15 countries and 6 continents in 2014, Spartan Race is available to most everyone in the world, and it landed on our shores late last year in 2015.

Currently there are 5 types of Spartan races in Singapore- The Spartan Sprint, The Spartan Super,The Spartan Beast, Spartan Trifecta and the Spartan Junior Race. And the very latest for the adult edition will be Spartan Stadium Race which is happening on the same dates and location as Spartan Junior Race this October (details below).

Though its just a mere 1 km for my kids aged 5 and 7 , but it is unlike typical kids fun run, there are many obstacles to clear along the way (many of which my kids have never attempted before).  It is not just about completing the 1km race, but to challenge and clear each obstacle as it comes and never give up! The Spartan Junior Race was created to help young athletes of all athletic abilities foster a life-long commitment to fitness and health. The Spartan Junior Race will provide an opportunity for kids to develop and test their fitness in an exciting, outdoor environment where having fun and getting dirty is mandatory.

On 29 and 30th October 2016 (the Deepavali weekend, for those of us who are not taking a short vacay and planning for a day outdoors, pen this in!), the Spartan Junior Race will be held at Yio Chu Kang Stadium! Currently, the early bird is at SGD 48 per child, thereafter it will be SGD 55 per child. Do register at https://register.chronotrack.com/r/22316

Legoland Malaysia unveils the latest blockbuster ride in Nov 2016 – NINJAGO™ The Ride

It has been almost 4 years since Legoland Malaysia opened its door to the many fortunate kids/adults (those who grew up playing LEGO) in this part of the world. From then on, they have added their themed hotel in 2013 and Water Park in 2014 so that there is always something new for the returning guests and for the new guests, there is so much to do and play that 1 day visit is hardly enough.

My first maiden visit with the kids was in 2014 and I only managed to cover the Legoland Theme park and hotel, and totally ignoring the water park as it was just a 2d1n stay but  it was one of my best theme park trips ever – a total wholesome LEGO experience from the hotel to the park. I promised the kids that we will return for another trip to cover the Water Park.

And before we can tick our own personal check list that we have conquered the Water Park, Legoland is launching  a brand new 4D indoor ride which totally changes the way we view typical indoor ride (which I will go into details in a bit) in November. This ride will be housed in a brand new section of the Park called NINJAGO™ World. This is the largest additional investment since the opening of the Park in 2012. Estimated at more than RM 40 million, the latest attraction promises to be a real game-changer to theme parks around the world.

ninjago

Imagine this…with just hand motions, kids and adults experiencing the NINJAGO™ The Ride will be able to throw lightning bolts, move shockwaves, send ice soaring and emit fire balls through the use of cutting-edge technology.

Based on the popular LEGO® series NINJAGO™, which is brought to life by The LEGO® Group through a line of construction toys and a TV series on Cartoon Network, guests will enjoy interactive elements and this new ride where guests harness the power of four elements and use teamwork to battle the Great Devourer.

The NINJAGO series tells the story of four young ninja heroes – Kai, Jay, Cole and Zane – who train under the watchful eye of Master Wu to master an ancient martial art – Spinjitzu. Guests play as Ninja warriors in training under the guidance of NINJAGO™ character Master Wu to vanquish a legion of enemies from snake tribes, ghosts and skeletons to the Great Devourer. NINJAGO™ The Ride enables guests to demonstrate their ninja skills without the use of a hand held device and instead, they simply use their hand gestures. Guests  collect points for their training and battle efforts throughout the ride and scores are displayed when their quest is completed. 4D effects such as heat, smoke and wind are also incorporated throughout the adventure, giving guests the ultimate interactive experience.

Guests less than 48”/122cm tall must ride with an adult. Due to the high intensity of the ride, we recommend the ride is best suited for guests age 4 and older. For now, there is the NINJAGO™ Live Show: The Realm of Shadows where guests will enter the world of NINJAGO™ and join the courageous Ninjas – Kai, Nya and friends – on a mission to protect Bandit, a YinYang Dragon who will one day fully grow into a powerful Light Dragon. The evil Clouse and his Shadow Minions want to steal it and plunge Ninjago into the Realm of Shadows.

My family is all set to pay another visit to Legoland for its Water Park which we missed out and be Ninja warriors at the all new NINJAGO™ The Ride!

Little Star by I Theatre (giveaway of 1 pair of tickets for 27 Aug 2.30pm show)

If I were to ask any parents , what was the first song that you sang to your kids. I am sure it will be Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Be it the English and Mandarin version, this song is a perennial favourite. I am sure my kids will also sing the first song to their kids. Now my 13-month-old is also enjoying this song where he will open and close his fists to the tune of the song.

Little Star, based on the very famous nursery rhyme, will be a highly visual and interactive production, with wonderful tunes, but minimal dialogue, exploring the wonders of the universe, and the joy of re-discovering your home and family. I am hoping to introduce the wonderful world of live kids production to my 13 month old through something he can recognised with……..the STAR!

TLS015-LandscapeWEB-670x415

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,

How I wonder what you are…

Little Star sits in the sky. She sees the other stars, the Moon, the Earth, the planets.

And she wonders…

“What am I? Who am I? Where do I belong?”

When a comet passes by, she hitches a ride, and her adventures begin.

Follow Little Star through space, down to earth and even under the sea, as she tries to find her place in the universe.

Will you help Little Star find her way back home before the sun rises?

The most awaited Singapore Repertory Theatre/TLC production of the year – The Three Little Pigs

I may sound like a broken record but if you have read my reviews of previous Singapore Repertory Theatre/The Little Company productions,  you will know that the show that make me fall madly deeply in love with SRT/TLC is the Mandarin production of The Three Little Pigs , I was so mesmerised by the charisma of the big bad wolf that I have new admiration for kids productions etc. Since there, I am have been a firm supporter of SRT/TLC productions hence my kids get to watch most if not all of them!

And finally after waiting for more than 3 years, The Three Little Pigs is back but now interpreted in English. I am sure the songs will the same catchy tunes as the ones in Mandarin but I can’t wait to meet the big bad wolf. I  really hope they cast a very strong actor to play that role.

Main visual

Based on the sold-out performances previously, I am very sure this will be another home run. Please do not wait any longer and book your tickets now. I know my kids cant wait to meet Char, Siu and Bao!

This musical is recommended for children aged 3 and above. The Three Little Pigs teaches little ones how success can be achieved through hard work and perseverance. Filled with humour, this endearing tale will leave you squealing with glee and howling with laughter!

While waiting for August to come, get your kids familiarise with the songs if they don’t already know them by heart for them to sing-a-long. P/S for kids turning 3 and going to be introduced to the wonderful world of live children productions, this is one of the best shows to start with as the story line is simple (maybe to some the big bad wolf maybe a tad scary but he is so funny too) Small J, turned 3 recently is a veteran though as he gets to tag along his older siblings since the age of 1.5 years old but having seen the posters and print ads he has been asking me where are the three little pigs (when I watched the Mandarin version, he was not even born yet!).

DATES: From 4th August 2016 Monday to Friday 10am; Saturdays 11am and 2pm
PRICES: From $25 excluding SISTIC fee. Group discounts/ Family Packages available

Fun N Laughter play gym – a cosy and intimate venue for kids birthday party

I have organised many children birthday parties since my eldest’s 1st birthday party in 2010 with many themes  and many different venues but oddly, I have always skipped play gym as an option. The most common venue for me  is the condo’s function room purely out of convenience and cost. Especially for full month celebrations, it is easy to run up and down if its my own’s condo function room. Besides that,  the closest I did to a play gym birthday party was a full fledged restaurant in East Coast Park which has a play gym for its diners (which has since closed down). But that said, I have been to many birthday parties held at play gyms and knew how much fun the birthday kid and his friends will have and the host do not have to think too hard how to kids the kids entertained.

The mother of all play gym birthday parties would be Fidgets at the Grandstand with many party rooms and a huge play area. I do not fancy big parties as I feel awful for not being able to host and talk to each party guests. And I am very paranoid for losing my younger kids in the huge maze and structure when I do not have sight of them especially when I need to host and couldn’t pay full attention on my kids.

Normally, I keep my parties very small for my own sanity, 15 to 20 kids the max so that we can have a cosy and intimate party.  On the record, this is the first time ever in my party hosting and planning years, I am doing a joint birthday bash for my youngest 2 boys whose birthdays are 4 days apart and my first at a playgym.

Its normally a very busy first half of the year for me as all kids birthdays are all in the beginning of half of the year starting from Feb, then April and now finally June. Every 2 months in the first half of the year, there is a party I need to plan. I like to be able to plan and DIY (as much as I can but nowadays I tend to be lazy as I can get cheap customised party decor from Taobao) the kids party and give my kids a small , cosy and yet memorable party with their siblings and their friends.

So as I have 2 birthday boys aged 1 and 3,  I need a venue which is not- too-big play area which are suitable for them and also their friends up to ages 10 (ie not too kiddish). After my extensive research for a playgym venue , I found a pretty new centrally located play gym Fun N Laughter at City Square Mall. I personally has not patronise the gym before , but my kids had with their daddy before and told me its was fun. Ok, truth to be told all play gyms are fun , big or small. The kids all do have a great time, its only the parents who are the ones distinguishing a good one from a not so good one I guess.

Based on what I gather from the internet, some special features ONLY found at Fun N Laughter are a huge snack and ladder floor game, projection room, a Tayo bus ride-on. The rest will be a  typical play gym with ball pits, air blasters, slides. Frankly, as a parent I get overwhelmed with big gyms where sometimes  I had a hard time locating my kids in the play structure. So sometimes a reasonably sized play structure is all that I asked for especially for my younger ones like the 3 year old. He can actually play and climb and slide unsupervised but I won’t do that if the play structure its too huge or too tall ( I had a lost kid once at Kids Amaze Toa Payoh when I left small J to play on his own and  I didn’t have sight because the structure was too huge and massive)

And its probably one of the few play gyms who has a toy shop at the front for some last minutes gift shopping or for me, I actually bought my cake topper from them the night before the party. They stock a great selections of Tayo and Pororo toys. I was in a hunt for Pororo toys  to be used as the cake topper as small J is in love with the penguin (wanted to incorporate it into the cake some how) and besides the toy store at Pororo Park, I think Fun n Laughter is the only other brick and mortar shop which carries Pororo toys.

I got the pororo toy plane from Fun N Laughter the day before my party! how convenient

There are some pictures of the play gym when I arrived at opening hours before the weekend crowd and my party guests arrive.  They even have a diaper changing facilities within the gym so that guests do not need to walk out the mall’s baby room.

This room has a projector whereby there are interactive games. The room also has toys for toddlers and babies,  I wish they could stock it up with toys for the babies and toddler

They were so kind let me come in the night before for 1 hour plus to setup the room so that I have pretty much done most of the decor before the actual day itself. It took a whole load of stress out of me.

They only have 1 party room which can catered to 15 to 25 kids.

IMG_6926

They have kids tables and chairs good enough for 25 kids

IMG_6972

they allowed for any outside caterer (warmers allowed too) which I got from Neo Garden, the spread was placed over the shelves top . just nice without taking up unnecessary space in the room

When I was setting up my decor, the only problem I had was that the wall paper around the room was too loud for my party theme. If you have a underwater theme, this is perfect but I had an aviation theme birthday party and already purchased a banner. So what I did was to overlap a huge white background before hanging my birthday banner. Alternatively, you can easily have huge customised party backdrop of 120mx 120m/150m to cover the existing underwater backdrop.

IMG_6947

my diy dessert table setup with decor and goodies from Taobao and Oriental Trading (US)

All set for my boys’ combined bash, and at the end of the party, every kid including the 1 year old boy had so much fun, coming back to the point , to all kids all play gyms are fun irregardless of size! Of course, I have some basic requirements which are easily met – slides, ball pits, air blasters! Sharing from pictures from the parties:

I must say Fun N Laughter has one of the most reasonably priced party packages and its centrally located (trust me,  I have done my research and comparison while searching for the perfect venue for my cosy and intimate party). It is not the size of Fidgets or Polliwogs but sometimes I get very overwhelmed when the venue has many party rooms to accommodate many parties and quantity of kids from the different parties and also the walk in guests especially on weekends, so Fun N Laughter is just the perfect size for me.

And I have forgotten to add that this is probably the only play gym which allows for a 2.5 hours exclusive usage of the party rooms. Typically its only a 2 hours usage, which i feel its rather rush and hush, so an additional half hour really makes a difference. We never felt hurried to leave the party room as most of kids “refuse” to leave the play gym. I actually stayed beyond 2.5 hours as I believe there were no party after my slot. My kids were very entertained and had such a good time with their friends and celebrated their birthday in the presence of closed friends and family, what else can I ask for! Having the party at a play gym is save me a lot of unnecessary hassle and the kids are wildly entertained without a need of a party host or entertainer! This shall not be the last time I am hosting at a play gym after my relatively stress free experience hosting at the gym.

Shrek the Musical – there is abit of everything for everyone just like in the movie

As it is a very first time Shrek made famous in the movies is improvised into a musical and first time ever in Singapore, I really did not know what to expect. Of course, all will know that finally Princess Fiona will be with Shrek for the happily ever after but how will the production incorporated Shrek and his friends and foes into a stage musical production  is something that I am curious to find out with my kids.

As there are many fairy tale characters which my kids can relate to and being exposed the movie already, I went to the musical with J, C and small J. It was small J first time to a full length musical at Marina Bay Sands. He has come of age (1 more week to 3 years old! ) to join me for full length musicals at Marina Bay Sands Theatre. I remember J’s first musical was Lion King when he was 2.5 years old. Being a first time mum and J’s first musical, it was a 3 adults to 1 kid ratio worrying that he can’t sit through the musical etc or an adult need to bring him out if he cries. 5 years later and 3 more kids added, I am indeed very experienced now so the ratio was reversed, 1 adult to 3 kids! And guess what, small J even though it is his maiden show, but he sat and watch and mesmerised for the entire length of the musical (there is a short intermission), all in all around 2 hours in total. So for those of you who are thinking what is the best age to bring your kids to the musical, well,  based on my experience, 3 will be a good age! But there is a disclaimer too, I wouldn’t say small J has loads of TV time but he is very attentive to movies in cinema , anything of moving picture in nature, so it explains why he could sit and not fidget a single bit. He was scared when the theatre turned dark but being sitted next me he quickly forgotten his fear when the actors came on stage.

Back to the musical proper, I would say it follows the storyline of the original Shrek the movie. It started by showing young Shrek being sent away by his family and Princess Fiona banished in a tower at age 7. FYI young Shrek is acted by a group of  local cast who were selected from a local audition in Singapore held in March.

All the fairy tale characters (my kids had so much fun spotting and recognising the different fairy tale characters) were banished from Duloc (the land that Lord Farquaad rules) to the swamp where Shrek lives alone. Shrek was annoyed by the uninvited visitors and promised to meet Lord Farquard so that the fairy tale characters can return back to their rightful home and away from his swamp. Along the way, he met his soon to be BFF , Donkey. Donkey brought the house down with his funny antics and big voice.

Travel_Song_with_Jeremy_Gaston_as_Donkey_and_Perry_Sook_as_Shrek_L_vR

And finally we get to meet Lord Farquaad as you know he is really short in the movie and so too in the musical with special attire and the actor had to performed on his knees through the musical to play the role of pint sized Lord Farquaad. Despite having to dance, walk and performed on his knees, Lord Farquaad, to me stole the show. He is braggy, proud and funny too! He tortured the gingerbread man to make him divulge the location of Princess Fiona , as he needed to marry a princess to be a king. As Fiona is locked in a castle tower guarded by lava and a dragon. When Shrek came to Duloc and met Lord Farquaad, Lord Farquaad offered to give Shrek the deed to his swamp if he were to bring the princess to him.

Christian_Marriner_as_Lord_Farquaad_in_Shrek_The_Musical_L_vR

WhatGÇÖs_Up_Duloc_featuring_Christian_Marriner_as_Lord_Farquaad_L_vR

Shrek and Donkey traveled to the castle and split up to find Fiona. Donkey encountered the dragon , which is a super huge puppet carried by 4 actors  in charge for the different effect of the dragon, eyes, mouth, wings, body and tail. And I must say the dragon sang so well and so real and become J’s favourite part of the show.

Shrek the Musical

There was a heart warming scene whereby 3 Fionas of different ages sang together lamenting when the day will come when the prince charming will rescue her from the tower and that today shall be the day.

I_Know_ItGÇÖs_Today_with_Whitney_Winfield_as_Fiona_L-vR

Finally, Shrek finds Fiona, in a manner so different from the way she has imagined for the past years, lack of romanticism. All 3 managed to escape the dragon and Fiona was thrilled to be rescued but is quickly disappointed when Shrek reveals he is an ogre. She found new hope of her prince charming when told that Shrek was set by Lord Farquaad to rescue her.

Make_A_Move_with_Perry_Sook_as_Shrek_ Jeremy_Gaston_as_Donkey_and_Whitney_Winfield_as_Fiona_L_vR

At this time, it was revealed that Fiona will transformed into an orge after sunset and only her true love’s kiss will return her to her love’s true form. Throughout their journey back to Duloc, Shrek and Fiona started to fall in love with each other. The night before reaching Duloc, Shrek wanted to confess his love for Fiona only to eavesdrop hearing that Fiona telling Donkey will never love a beast so ugly which was actually in reference to her being an ogre and not of Shrek.

The next morning, Shrek has brought Lord Farquaad to Fiona. The couple return to Duloc, while a hurt Shrek angrily leaves his friendship with Donkey and returns to his now-vacated swamp, remembering what Fiona “said” about him.

Donkey came back to the swamp to clear the misunderstanding and Shrek knew that he has to stop the wedding at Duloc. Shrek stopped the wedding before Farquaad can kiss Fiona before sunset. He told her that Farquaad is not her true love and only marrying her to become king. The sun sets, which turned Fiona into an ogre in front of everyone in the church. Outraged by Fiona’s change in appearance, Farquaad ordered Shrek killed and Fiona detained. Shrek whistled for Dragon who bursts in along with Donkey and devoured Farquaad. Shrek and Fiona kissed and she discovered her true form is of the orge. The finale  is where all the fairy tale characters celebrated Shrek and Fiona’s union to the tune of I’m a Believer and they lived happily ever after.

Freak_Flag_with_Tony_Johnson_as_Pinocchio_L_vR

I must say the storyline in the musical does follow very closely the original first installment of the Shrek and the Shrek’s Scottish accent was kept just like in the movies! Fiona was just the perfect, fiesty, unconventional princess. Donkey kept the whole musical so comical and upbeat and my personal favourite, Lord Farquaad , I thought it was even better than in the movie and his adult jokes here and there for the adult audiences. Is it suitable and entertaining for kids, based on my 3 kids aged 3 to 7 years of age, they are able to appreciate it although they liked different parts of the musical. My 3 year old wore his Shrek hairband to sleep, that is how much he loved the musical.

Well, there was just 1 complaint, the show didn’t start on time and it dragged on way past 10pm which is a pretty late night for the younger kids. I suspect its due to the ticket goers who are late for the show, so typical of Singaporean.

There is just 1 week more of Shrek the Musical. For true fans of Shrek, please catch this musical as it has done the movie justice. And for the families who are looking for a feel good musical to watch with the kids, this is the one for the holidays!

iFly Singapore – to a 7 year old, probably his BEST and most WOW experience ever!

Truth to be told, I personally had been on iFly Singapore on a rare date with hubby 2 years ago. Speaking from personal experience, it was so surreal to be able to fly even for short instances in the wind tunnel, a very highly recommended once in a lifetime experience!  Actually, one of my bucket list is to do skydiving! I guess this is as close to meeting my bucket list.

201406181530~734955

i looked pretty cool

And thanks to my experience on my maiden flight with iFly Singapore, I came to know that the minimum age for iFly Singapore was 7 years of age (ie not the year they turn 7 but after their 7th birthday). So since 2 years back, I already set my mind to bring my eldest boy for his turn once he turned 7. When he turned 7 this year, I conveniently forgotten the little wish I had for my eldest , blame it all the Term2 school review etc. It was a busy April and May for me and I was just so looking forward towards the long 1 month school holidays where I do not need to worry about homework and reviews (for those who does not have kids in primary school, reviews just simply mean tests or exam just in a nicer way)

When it was time to plan for his 4 week long holidays ,as we are going for family trip for the second half of the holidays, yay!, so technically I only need to plan for 2 weeks. As I already signed him up for 1 week of Design Innovation camp with The Keys for the first week of the holidays, so I only have the second week of the holidays left to plan.

As we had a hectic first week, I decided to scale it down for week 2 as mummy needs a break too! Suddenly, I remembered by the little wish I had 2 years back now that he has turned 7, to bring my eldest for iFly Singapore and what better timing that the school holidays! Thanks to the kind folks at iFly Singapore, my 2 year old wish came true! J actually is well aware of iFly Singapore as he has seen my picture from my and his daddy’s maiden flight. So when I told him that I will be bringing him for iFly Singapore he was so excited that he was practically counting down the days.

Finally, the most awaited day has come….

IMG_6685

It was very very hot day, so entering iFly Singapore was a much welcome change from the outside. It was so so hot outside that J can bearly keep his eyes open and if the heat in Sentosa was too hot to bear, one of the best places to visit in Sentosa is iFly Singapore!

As J’s session has been pre-booked by his dearest mummy, all I had to do was to sign an indemnity form on his behalf and for J to prove that he is 7 years of age (so MUST REMEMBER to bring your child’s bus card/student card). Everyone is required to bring their identification card for verification purposes regardless of age.

IMG_6690

Booking online for your session with iFly Singapore is a pretty straightforward process as you can select the session and pay online here. Paying online allows you to check on the availability and its cheaper too if booked two days in advance. If you were to purchase onsite, there will be a risk that the sessions are already fully taken up as there is a limit of 16 flyers, I guess purchasing at venue is more for the tourists visiting Sentosa.

Just note that you have to be onsite 1 hour before the pre-booked session for the pre-flight video, training and safety regulations. So like for J’s session which was the 5.30pm slot, we needed to arrive at 4.30pm.

Once it’s your turn, there will be an announcement where you are ushered through the departure gate. The flyers will enter sophiscated-looking dark chamber to view the video introducing iFly Singapore and outlining the entire experience. Through the video, I also found out that iFly Singapore is Southeast Asia’s largest wind tunnel.

IMG_6689

One of the introduction videos shown in that chamber can be seen below

Thereafter, the door will open where the flyers will be escorted to a small theatre to meet their instructor for their session. For J’s session, he had instructor Jery. Jery will let every flyer try their flying posture on the bench and explain to them basic hand signal (the flyers are required to wear ear plugs during flight, provided by iFly Singapore).  J was lucky that the session had many children, and only 2 adults so that he don’t feel so intimated. I must say many of the boys in J’s session were very enthusistic in asking questions after questions . Then said I must pay Jery compliment for being about the control the constant barrage of questions from the very raring to go boys! He was also very observant that one of the flyers was a tourist from China and quickly helped her to do simple translation as all the videos and instructions given were all in English! All in all, I can tell that Jery was a very experienced instructor and I have confidence that J will be in very good hands for his first maiden flight. Finally, Jery did a quick check of their footwear to make sure it won’t dropped off during flight. If you don’t come in proper shoes, you can always rent it with them. And for ladies and girls, no dresses or skirts as it is difficult to wear the flight suit later.

IMG_6700

Finally, its time for the real thing. They are all escorted upstair to the flying chamber area. They can see the on-going flight as well, but now its time to get suited up. Next to the flying chamber, this is the area where they get the flight suits, goggles , earplugs and helmets.

IMG_6716

J told me he couldn’t smile coz the goggles are blocking his cheeks!

IMG_6731

in flight chamber

I am amazed by the turnaround of all the flight sessions. True enough with all the on-going: – video, training, changing of attire, once its 5.30pm, the prior session would have finish their session and it’s time for the current session. Everything running like a clockwork, ie no delays what-so-ever.  The most basic package, “The First Timer Challenge” package consists of 2 skydives.

Finally, its master J’s turn!

IMG_6753a

After each of the flyers has had their 2 flights, if there are more time, the instructor can offer additional flight for SGD 40 which is a steal as compared to the initial price. And the bonus part, the instructor will bring the flyer together as high up in the tunnel! J “begged” me to let him do the extra flight , I was abit hesitant as it would mean spending SGD 40  but with the benefit of hindsight, I am glad to have let him do the extra flight as he will enjoyed another level of experience where he will fly high above with the instructor.

This is not J , but just to show the height the first timers are “brought up” by the experienced instructor during the extra flight.
IMG_6818

And this is J on his extra flight,

IMG_6838a

I shall not leave you with many photos but many videos as I personally think that only videos will the do the flight and experience justice!  Not words nor photos.

Each flyer is given their own flight certificate at the end of the session. Besides being commemorative in nature, the certificate can be used to skip the initial video and instructor session (pre-flight session) if you were to return for future flights with iFly Singapore.

For parents whose kids are turning 7 in the second half of 2016, and if you are cracking your brains what to get as a birthday present for your child, think no further, book a flight with iFly Singapore. And if you as the parent has not tried it before yourself, experience it together for an unforgettable family bonding experience! I did not do the flight with J as I have done it before and I wanted to stay by the side to take photos of my son’s first experience. Do note that non flyers only have restricted view of the flying chambers. Flyers can purchase video and photos at level 1 after their session (see first picture of J’s mummy flying, that was purchased from iFly Singapore after my maiden session)

For others who are thinking how to fill the June holidays or end it with an unforgettable experience, I would strongly recommend an iFly Singapore experience for your child (so long they have past their 7th birthday). Now I have a small problem, all other experiences that he will encounter in future will be paled in comparison to this!

Design Innovation 5 day holiday camp at The Keys – Innovate with Empathy

In the day and age where kids are exposed to technology at a very young age , I have tried my very best to keep technology at bay for my kids. They have little smartphone and tablet interactions (I have never own any tablet or Ipad) and I wanted to keep it that way for as long as I can . I do know that kids exposed to cyberspace maybe be more knowledgeable, perhaps smarter but I feel that my kids will definitely catch up during formal schooling.  He maybe the most technology deprived kid as he only touched a laptop during K2 when I sign him up for a coding class with IDA. He was very lost as well intrigued by it both the laptop and the coding software during that class.

In Primary 1,  there are e-learning modules and a daily online Mathematics challenges as part of the school curriculum. I guess time has come for my boy to embrace some controlled environment of technology.

So for the past 2 schooling terms, he has been using the laptop rather proficiently with little help from me for his school work and e-learning. (back to the point kids are inherently able to pick up and learn things quickly)

And in the name of embracing technology , I am not about to open a floodgate where he plays electronic games etc but meaningful technology-based programme and classes which are outside of school curriculum. Classes for coding  is the craze now , see this Straits Time article. There are many schools and centres offering coding and robotics but The Keys holiday camp for Design Innovation caught my eyes.

There are actually 2 suitable camps for J organised by The Keys for the June school holidays – Design Innovation (6 to 8 years old) and Tech Star Junior (6 to 8 years old). I must admit that the more true-blue coding class would be the Tech Star Junior which uses Scratch software to create animated stories (J and I had a brief introduction when we attend the IDA workshop last year) but I decided that Design Innovation camp would be something more beneficial and engaging for him at this juncture. Besides using the laptop and software, I would like see a mix of “hand-based” activities which is exactly that he got at the end of the camp.

On the first day of the June holidays, J needed to wake up earlier than usual (he attends afternoon session on a normal school term) but I assure him its going to be really fun and his eyes popped up when he saw the LEGO Mindstorms EV3. He was really excited to head to The Keys every morning for the next 4 days of camp too.  The Keys is located at Odeon Towers (central location) which is good as I could drop him earlier before 9am before heading to work. Since the camp ends at 2pm, there is some arrangements needed to be made for full time working parents. I was lucky that a friend of mine has enrolled her girl in the same class and we took turns doing the picking up at 2pm.

J loved it so much that he actually incessantly requested to return for another week of camp. In fact since Day 2, he has been begging me to extend his camp till the end of week 2 of school holidays! There is indeed another another suitable camp for his age category which is the Tech Star JR which is more coding based using Scratch. Let’s say that mummy need a rest from the out-of-cycle routine and there is still the MEGA big December holidays to fill.

I guess his immense interest stemmed from the fact that this is something that he has never done before and the things with boys and LEGO.  Sorry to generalize but the girls in camp also had as much fun (testimony from my friend’s girl who attended the same camp as J). He kept raving about the breakfast challenges, who did what and who won etc and the capabilities of his and his friends’ EV3.

What I really like about these holiday camps organised by The Keys is the small age gap. Some holiday camps and workshops have age ranges from 7 to 12 years old. Speaking from a mother of a 7 year old (which is the youngest of the range), I feel that it is too wide of a range. What a 10 year old can understand may not be what a 7 year old can understand. Hence, I like that this  camp has a small age gap which is for kids between 6 to 8 years old. The knowledge and level of understanding would not be very different and the kids can discuss and relate to one another more easily.

The other reasons why I chose this over the Tech Star Junior was this camp is not all about technology ie the kids do not “play” with the EV3 thoughout the daily 5 hour camp. It is about problem solving and empathy with the daily breakfast challenges. You might be thinking why empathy. During the camp, they are required to problem solve how Tumanka (a kid from a developing country) goes to school and the kids from the same country take so much effort to go to school. This is where kids in the camp (our city kids) can form more understanding, appreciation and empathy towards children of developing countries and develop their problem solving skills.

If you read the course structure, there are some pretty big jargons throughout the course description which I can’t really explain at my child’s understanding level  – prototyping, innovation, modular design, etc. The instructors were able to bring such abstract concepts  at the kids’ level of understanding in a fun way which really amazes me. Most importantly, some level of empathy as they critically think of ways for improve the livelihood of kids in a developing country and finally build an amusement park for them as a finale to the 5 day camp.

Just to give a flavour of the Design Innovation camp that J just did with The Keys. As it is a drop off programme, the information below are based on the camp course structure , the best J has described his daily on-goings and photos provided by The Keys.

Day 1

The day typically start with a breakfast challenge where kids are divided into teams to tackle the challenge. For the first challenge, the teams are to build the tallest structure using spaghetti. This teaches them creative problem solving and teamwork.

13332794_10153884127604143_2894128604995840437_n

the winning spaghetti tower

Next up, they are introduced to the design challenge topic which will set the tone for the week long camp. They were introduced to Tumanka , a 6 year old kid from a developing country and the challenges she and her friends face when they needed to go to school. They were given problems such as reasons why Tumanka takes a long time to get to school. They were given a big piece of white paper to do mind mapping and present it to the rest of the class. This is where they learn empathy and storyboarding.

Finally, the highlight of the day, LEGO! Ok not just any LEGO but the highest end of the LEGO series – LEGO Mindstorms EV3.  By using LEGO WeDo software, the kids are required to build and programme the EV3 to pick the kids from remote villages and bring them to school.

LEGO WeDo

Day 2
For the breakfast challenge, they were tasked to build a very strong bridge for the billy goats to cross in Tumanka’s village with the use of ice cream sticks and duct tapes.

They further enhanced their individual EV3 capability with more motions and actions by building an automated feeding machine to feed the billy goats – innovation in daily processes.

Day 3

They are given a task to design Tumanka’s school from paper, straws, binderclips and pipe cleaner. From the different materials, the kids will recognise constraints and come up with possible solutions.

They even had a mini field trip to IDA Labs at National Design Centre (a stone’s throw away from The Keys) to understand how people innovate in real life settings.

Last order for the day is to improve of the EV3 capabilities with another design challenge.

Day 4
For breakfast challenge, they built paper planes and the winner will be the one with the longest flight distance. The last order of the day was another design challenge and once again , the kids will do their programming on LEGO WeDo and test it out on their EV3.

Day 5

The last design challenge for the camp was to build an amusement park for Tumanka and her friends which will be later presented and showcased to the parents at the end of the camp. Each kid will do a different park ride.  J chose to make a space-shot , which he proudly shown me how it works.

Other kids designed ferris wheel, carousel, roller coaster as part of the design challenge. J also brought me around showing me his team’s design of the bridge, school and the daily breakfast challenges.

SWEET by ACT3 International – We’ve been invited to a party!

We had very fond memories of our first ACT 3 workshop last year entitled Jelly, Wobble and when I saw a similar event happening this year, I knew my kids had to do it again!

Once we stepped into ION Art Gallery , the location for SWEET, we kind of forgotten that we are for a workshop. We thought we were invited to a birthday party all decked in candyland theme. As we are arrived earlier, we spend the time taking photos as everything was so SWEET and pretty! Sorry for the photos overload , but it’s just too pretty not too share.

A wall of doughnuts, a wall of inflatable giant cupcakes, a cake as tall as the kids and a ice cream making shop. I just got so inspired to do a similar theme for my girl’s birthday party next year complete with an ice cream parlour….. Sorry, I digress….back to the workshop proper. For this year’s session, the storytelling session was brought to the beginning of the session instead of towards the end. As it was a workshop inspired by the story of Charlie and the chocolate factory, the story teller narrated the famous story by Roald Dahl in 20 minutes. It was a good introduction to kids who are not familiar of the story which has a movie made for it as well. J has not read it before and its time to get add this book into his bookshelf!

IMG_5824

IMG_5831

Parents were invited for the story-telling session. There were lots of interaction with the kids and the sound effects accompanying the story-telling session make it more interesting, not a dull moment.

IMG_5836

After the storytelling session, the parents are asked to leave the venue so that the kids can be rotated between the different stations for their activities. (yay! me-time and shopping time at ION!) I do not have photos to share or much to review so what I gathered were what the kids told me or from their website. The remaining 1.5 hours were divided into an art and craft session to create colourful lollipops ,  ice cream making session which is THE highlight (and they get to eat it thereafter, I was told its Vanilla ice cream) and a drama workshop where the kids can choose to act out their favourite ice cream where they learn to move and physicallise actions through creative expression.

IMG_5889

IMG_5937

Once again, I am a big fan of the drama classes by ACT 3 especially their holiday camp. However, as a full time working mum, in order to send my kids for it , it would be mean that I had to take 5 days of leave to ferry them to the camp. That is why I especially like this genre of workshop which is a 2 hours session broken into 4 different components comprising a story telling session, art and craft session,  gelato-making session and a drama workshop. Perfect for time-pressed mummy like me and my kids still get a SWEET flavour of a drama class with ACT 3 and some inspired art and craft thrown into it. The kids remembered Princess Lolly in Jelly, Wobble fondly and told me she turned 90 this year (because last year was her 89th birthday). And this year they will remembered Charlie and his adventures and the ice cream they made and tasted!

The workshop runs till 5th June and happens only once a year in June. This year it is incorporated as part of the Art3i Festival which you can read more about it here. I really hope that ACT 3 can do a similar workshop for the December holidays! Oh, and while  I was at ION ART, I discovered that you can actually take the lift next to the gallery all the way up to the 55th floor for ION SKY which is an observation deck and its FREE!  Do bring the kids for a walkabout if you are there for the afternoon session before the workshop or after the workshop. Opened every day from 3 to 6pm.
